47th Cannes Royal Regatta from September 21 to 27: another dream year!

Friday 29 August 2025

After four extraordinary editions, the 47th Régates Royales de Cannes are once again shaping up to be a great success this year. The number of entries is expected to exceed 120 competitors, making it the largest classic yacht regatta in the world.

The Cannes Yacht Club, which is spearheading the organization of this 47th edition of the Régates Royales, has a long history of experience, and for good reason. Comeback. In the 1920s, Prince Henrik, King George V, and even the Prince of Wales, son of Queen Victoria and future Edward VII, regularly came to Cannes to enjoy the spring and late season for sailing. Christian X, King of Denmark, even celebrated his wedding on the Croisette in 1898. A sailing enthusiast and very good helmsman on his 6 M JI, a sublime 10-11 meter sailboat that was an Olympic class between 1908 and 1952, he even proposed organizing a major annual regatta in the bay. The city of Cannes, the Société des Régates de Cannes, and the International Yacht Club, which would later become the Yacht Club de Cannes, asked His Highness for permission to name the event the “Régates Royales de Cannes.” The answer was an immediate yes! The year was 1929. From then on, in addition to the world's elite, everyone who was anyone in yachting and the best naval architects of the time loved to gather in Cannes for a week of fierce competition. For nearly a century, nothing has really changed, with the Régates Royales de Cannes still attracting the same number of aesthetes and epicureans of classic sailing on the world's most beautiful traditional monohulls, magnificently restored and maintained.

For years, Jérôme Nutte, PRO (Principal Race Officer), has been coordinating the sporting side of things, the three race courses, and the schedule, supervising some 80 volunteers both on the water and on land, as well as sending a very detailed weather report to the sailors every morning at dawn: “I act as the link between the race committees and the Cannes Yacht Club. We are expecting 120 boats, but there should be even more,” explains this internationally renowned behind-the-scenes figure, who is involved in all the major events, not just the Régates Royales - the European and French championships, not to mention the Olympic Games... "This year, apart from the Big Boats, we have a really homogeneous field, with a series of boats that are very similar in rating and performance. Most of these sailboats have a rich history and impressive track records in the world's greatest races, and this year, for the first time, we have quite a few IOR Classics coming from far away, even from New Zealand. These are boats that are both modern and classic, with great stories behind them, and the enthusiasm of the owners to participate in the Régates Royales is a sign of the event's reputation..."

This stretch of water remains unique, with a bay protected from strong westerly winds by Cap Roux and from easterly winds by Cap d'Antibes. Of course, the Mediterranean has character, and sometimes a gust of Mistral wind, influenced by a low-pressure system over the Gulf of Genoa, blows in, transforming the playground into a field of bumps. Sometimes, however, the “Big Blue” is like a lake, the water rippled only by a light zephyr, or even gloomy under the rain and east wind... but that's rare.

Jean-François Cutugno, president of the Cannes Yacht Club, confirms: “For more than four years now, the stars have been aligned with perfect weather conditions. After an absolutely exceptional summer in which our young club members shone like never before, winning numerous world and French solo sailing titles, it's now time for the Régates Royales crewed regatta on the most beautiful traditional sailing boats on the planet!”
